Erika Trotzig

Erika Trotzig is a Swedish artist, based in London. Her practice spans sculpture, drawing and writing.

Erika uses instability, vulnerability and collapse as methodologies for examining the concerns within her practice.  The works are un-heroic, un-monumental, fragmentary and offhand. There is a search for the poetic: an attempt to access an aesthetic of failure. A sense of comedy: improbable meetings of material and construction methods, designed to expose vulnerability and absurdity. Pieces are unstable, often provisional and reworked, assembled from a mixture of mostly found materials. There is often juxtaposition between the manmade and the natural: wood and old mattresses, wool and sand, stone and felt.

Materials without memory but full of metaphorical resonances: materials that become time-based.

Erika is a recent graduate from MA Fine Art at Central St Martin’s. She has a background in fashion, creative direction and education. She had a clothing label in various forms between 2001-2011, making one off, handcrafted pieces. She has been an associate lecturer at CSM since 2001.
